 |
etc. |
One can see that:
- balanced hands have a 4 card suit, except for 5-3-3-2;
- 2 suit hands have a 5, 6, or 7 card suit. The 2nd suit has 4 or 5
cards;
- 1suit hands have at least a 6 card suit A second suit with 4 cards
may exist;
- 3 suit hands are playable with a fit in any of the 3 suits, or in
no trump when the lacking suit is good in partner's hand.
Shape and high card values of a hand determine the kind of bids to describe
it quickly and accurately. It is desirable that an opening bid makes a
very accurate description of the hand whenever possible. Opening bids
may be natural or artificial, weak or strong, exact or ambiguous. Partner's
answer must meet the requirements each opening asks. Exact openings put
partner in the role of the captain, strong openings are concerned primarily
with the contract level, weak openings are trying,
and a very weak opening asks
for a raise.
In this system, the opening bid is very low for strong hands (granting
good bidding space with small probability of an opponent's bid), and higher
bids with weak hands (stealing bidding space from the opponents and running
risks that are useful most of the times).
Only 1 NT, 1 ,
1 ,
and 2
openings will be discussed, as long as the other ones are natural and
follow SAYC. The 2 NT opening is natural also, but there are conventions
that follow.
Points are divided into brackets, and its combinations with partnership
give a very definite idea of the final contractl:
